"They said I would never escape the fortress prison of Corsicopa.
They said I would never be able to take on the despots and tyrants who ruled what was once our great nation.
They said my hope of rebuilding the armadas and the military would take over a century. That it was impossible.
They have always said many things, always doubting me, but now..
Now they say nothing.
They fear me, like a force of nature, a dealer in death and ruin.
My countrymen, my soldiers and officers, my comrades and colleagues, my friends, what do you say?" ~ Sky Marshall Corvus Ghent, after accepting position of Sky Marshall and Commander in Chief of Diaspora armed forces.
Ah...I've missed writing this guy's stuff. Yes Ghent is back and damn doesn't he look intense here? The outfit I'm still fiddling with though, but I'm keeping the cap, the chest part of the coat, and the scarf though it may be tucked in in the future. The weapons stay too, a long dagger and a rapier.
Corvus Ghent stats:
Height: 5'11 ft
Weight: 190 lbs
Build: Skinny but toned.
Eyes: Bright Green
'Skin': Dark Grey to Black, 'Hair" feathers have red tips at the ends though.
Here's a little theme music for him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J0ohV3rlDg
Yes I do imagine him to sound like Brian Cox yet with a slight French or Spanish accent.

He also plays the violin.
Corvus Ghent is hands down the most complex character in my gallery of anthros, aside from perhaps DeNola and the yet to be seen Temudjin. He's also the most enjoyable to write dialogue and scenes with, his oratory skills require some pretty heavy influences. Skolar Visari was an astounding character and yes Ghent is based off of him, but also many real life and fictional types as well.
*Anavel Gato from Gundam 0083
*Napoleon
*Erwin Rommel
*(Rather ironically) Lord Admiral Nelson
*Hannibal of Carthage.
*Lastly a very interesting poet and composer I stumbled across in my researching of Turkish culture and history: Nâzım Hikmet. This was a man who suffered greatly in life, spending I believe it was 14 years in an actual fortress prison for his political beliefs and then constantly harassed by police and state controlled agencies for years after that. This was during the 50s=60s I believe. He lived through WW2 as well, and was particularly horrified by the creation of nuclear weapons.

I am also aspiring to put such background and personality into each of my characters.
The majority of my characters (or at least, those in higher positions of power) do not approve of weapons of mass destruction either...
Lord Titanius: "I prefer the selective nature of cannons and rifles; civilian casualties weigh heavily on the conscience."
Emperor Stromiter: "They taint the land I seek to control, and are, therefore, counterproductive."
Xajaax: "...Too quick for my liking..."
I'm sorry to say that the only person I really researched on that list of inspiring figures is Erwin Rommel, though I haven't looked into his personality, only his tactics. Nazim Hikmet sounds like a very powerful, if tragic tale, though...

awesome character, for some reason he reminds me of Legate Lanius:http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Lanius
quite, reserved, incredibly powerful, and completely dedicated to his cause

Weapons in the setting don't exactly work like they do in the real world; their ranges are much shorter for small arms (mostly). Around 500 meters effective.
So due to this and other means, combat doctrines usually involve some manner of close combat although not always. To give you more of a reference to this mindset; in the wars of the 1700s all the way up to just after WW1, infantry engagements usually ended up with a melee determining the outcome.
Lastly; Ghent's rank and also mode of warfare wouldn't put him in direct harm (though he won't shy from a fight).

Ah, so guns are hindered, but not useless. Interesting.
The use of fixed bayonets is something I recall being big in that time for that reason. Warfare in here must be bloody brutal.
And I'm aware that a Sky Marshall wouldn't normally be leading a charge on the front lines; I was just commenting that a sword is a tough weapon to use up close, particularly when all you need to do is draw and fire a pistol to hit or kill something.

Yeah..sadly it seems to be something everyone has already forgotten and swept under the rug (WW1).
Although there will be many elements of WW2 in this as well, in particular the Spanish Civil War (seriously..WHY is that never discussed, why is the name Franco not cursed just as much as Hitler or Mussolini, he was a fascist and he even had death camps setup.
This all being just before and during WW2, and in some cases after)), there's also several medieval elements in there yet to be fully shown just yet, as will be elements from the Napoleonic Wars too (LOADED with that kinda stuff sometimes even.))
And yet, there will be so much more to this than just war and suffering; I'm thinking space race stuff, detective stories, uprisings, artists, cinema stars, da woikz my friend! :3

We're not, and here is the closest I could imagine for Ghent, and yes it did influence the speech there: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zUDCg9bHzVg
