Haha I'm, not great either. I got promoted into this position and had to learn on the job. I mostly use C# and javascript, though I dally in the others. I do a lot of googling, I'll say that much.
I've never touched flash. I've heard the learning curve is kind of rough though.

If you want to continue with that setting with it, along with adding new things in making us care and pretty scared about your characters in tight situations when we interact with them.

EEEEEEEH that'd be so awesome, nice detail for the ideas so far! ...hey, maybe this can be like instead of an RPG where you fight every monster, you could ALSO butter them up and make "peace" with them ;3
Kinda like Undertale except more sex. Anyways I'll be keeping an eye on news of this project for sure!

Yeah well these aren't just "ideas" they are stuff I am actively implementing in Flash : D the game code is about 70%-80% complete atm. Most work now is making content for the game (dialogue, art, quests, characters, etc).
The idea from the start was to have a game that doesn't force you to use violence and gives you other options. Having "peace" with different characters is pretty big part of the game.
The picture above isn't just concept/fake screenshot but actual interactive scene in the game.

Character specific scripts are written into the dialogue file that's an external .txt file : D locations can also be handled as characters. I can't imagine anyone doing it by writing the characters scripts right into the code itself, it just seems like pure madness. Including character dialogue into the code is also pretty insane xD
Dialogue index markers are checked by a parser for function markers and arguments for those "give_item.redpotion.(next dialogue index)" or something simple like "start_combat" etc.
