Actually, having no safety net sucks and freedom is better if you don't have to worry about smashing your head and bleeding out,you know?

The idea that it's "better" without one is just propaganda from the people who are too dickish to want to help provide one.

It depends on where you're standing. If I ever want to move out of the country and teach English, I"m going to have to do it without the safety net that living near/with family members provides. I can keep living comfortably and never do what I want or I can live.

Yeah, I was just being something's advocate there for perspective.

Think about how much that sort of adventure would suck if war broke out or something terrible happened and you couldn't get family on the phone! But knowing you've got a decent chance of a lifeline in the absolute worst cases makes it easier to go have adventures!


We're modern creatures, one doesn't exclude the other. But back when it did people put a lot of work into art and culture to make themselves feel better about their choices. Just pointing that out to help break the outmoded pattern...e don't *need* indoor 0lumbing either but by now most cultures are okay with enjoying it.


PS: That said too much closeness will also drive you crazy and the easiest way to resolve that is to get the distance you need (hooboy I stuck around places because it seemed to make economic sense but it wasn't worth my sanity- as soon as you aren't too close for comfortbeing available as part of others' nets stops being such a burden!)
