This piece comes from a basic observation that many thinkers and writers have been making for centuries now, indeed all the way back to Chaucer, and that is that people have this tendency to use lame attempts at humour to cover up how they really feel. Indeed, the phrase: 'just kidding' is right up there with: 'no offense, but' for being words that are almost never spoken in a sincere or truthful manner.
In modern parlance, the phrase I am referring to is: "Many a true word is spoken in jest." As I said, the earliest known iteration of this was stated by Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales, specifically in The Monk's Tale, when it was said: "Ful ofte in game a sooth I have herd saye!"
James Joyce later combined that maxim with the old Roman saying: In Vino Veritas to yield: In Risu Veritas.

Or as the band Rush said in their song "Freewill":
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice,
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice...
Ironically, I was just commenting on a previous submission that I'm not generally a fan of Rush's lyrics, although Neil Peart occasionally manages to come up something worth quoting, such as the above lines. :P
Nevertheless, and back on the immediate topic:
Thanks for your comments, and I'm glad you liked the piece.
