Contrary to my bugmen, I was deliciously pleased to see I did not loose my skills at drawing spaceships :3 :3
This was from a dream I had the same morning, following the reading of the latest volume of "Le Quatrième Pouvoir" by spanish artist Juan Gimenez, one of the latest artists drawing spaceships the way I love, like in the glorious eighties.

En vrac, Shinji Aramaki, Yuuki Masami, Kimitoshi Yamane, Hajime Katoki, Yutake Izubuchi, Shôji Kawamori, Mika Akitake, Kow Yokohama, Makoto Kobayashi, Mamoru Nagano, Lei Yumeno, Masami Obari, Hideki Kakinuma, Masamune Shirow.............

It looks too fragile however for such a use. The big pointy nose was an important part of that dream, but it was not clear what it was for ; I suspect however this comes from my readings about the tests settled a couple of years ago on a F-15 B with an elongated nose to hush the sonic bboms (see for example this article : http://www.space.com/businesstechno.....sonicboom.html ).
So impressive @.@ I still dont know how you know where to put all those tiny things in the back of the spaceship to look like they are supposed to go there o.o Every time I do it I usually dont put enough of what I do put in looks dumb and out of place -.- It's even a pain in the ass on tanks and I put those together *models mind you* all the time o.O
I know what you mean, I've had the same problem for a looooong time and still got it often for my backgrounds. But now it's just automatic, I don't even really THINK about putting what where, I'm doing it randomly... and that usually works. Question of habit I suspect :)
However, like you, I still got this problem for my scratchbuilt sci-fi kits.

It brings back memories of one of the greatest books I had in my childhood.... http://www.amazon.com/National-Geog.....515&sr=1-2
Ha ha ha, its grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand-grand son then ;D
But you are right, now that you mention it, the rear is totally reminiscent, with even some almost identical details... Though I never think about a Star Destroyer while creating that ship !!!!!!!!! Subconscious is a very strange thing.......... (and the designers of Star Destroyers just geniuses)

Oh I know, my subconscious has given me a nice little mindfuck here and there. :b
I think I remember seeing designs -like- this in issues of Star Wars: Dark Empire, which was partially what triggered the Star Destroyer response in the first place.
Urgh, I can't remember who made the Destroyer design; I want to say Ralph McQuarrie, but I don't know for sure. I think he was more assosciated with the character designs.

Never read Dark Empire so I can't tell you...
As for the Star Destroyers, I'm not sure about this (got it in one of the latest books about the designs in the serie), but there are at least two different who worked on it, the first sketch being too much of a navy battleship, so another guy re-worked it to something close to actual design.

i was almost, ALMOST about to say OH LAWD IS DAT SUM EXCELION??? until i took a closer look, and realized it has nothing to do with a battleship from a certain famous gainax animation production.
regardless, though, this spaceship design gave me that spirit of simplistic mechanical designs, where everything was designed in simple, non-angular, smooth surfaces n' such.
