We got some vegemite today from Mike's gal in Austrailia. She must really like me. I'm the only one here that eats it.
And yes. Vegemite... now brought to you by K R A F T!
>.> I found it goes good with cheddar. And crackers.
And yes, I put it on a cracker. it never hit my tounge like that. Are you nuts?

Vegemite... WTF? I've never heard of it, but I assume it is possibly even more hated by Americans that Poutine. I once went to a restaurant in the states and put gravy and cheese curds on French fries and grossed out everyone within 10 metres of me. Then I put ketchup on it and that radius became 100 metres.
When and if I visit you, I'm gonna have to make you a Vegemite -n- cheese sammich. Or, failing that, Marmite -n- cheese. Buttered bread, with a little bit of Veg or Marmite worked into one side, and cheese in between.
If you really want to know what Vegemite tastes like... I'd almost say "solidified soy sauce". That's not QUITE it, but it's the closest common flavor I can imagine. Both are heavy in "umame' flavor, though... one of the reasons so many folks like 'em!

And Twiglets. Never forget the Twiglets. <3 Twiglets, but they're too expensive for me to enjoy regularly over here in the US.

Marmite is superior. The British and the Aussie versions are different though - the Oz recipe includes sugar, the British one doesn't.
The Singapore exchange student we have working at our company love it on boiled rice.
I love Marmite on hot buttered toast.

How the hell do people NOT know where this comes from?

Vegemite is made from leftover brewers' yeast extract, a by-product of beer manufacture, and various vegetable and spice additives. The taste may be described as salty, slightly bitter, and malty - somewhat similar to the taste of beef bouillon. The texture is smooth and sticky, much like peanut butter. It is not as intensely flavoured as Marmite and it is less sweet than the New Zealand version of Marmite.
That is, they SCRAPE THE BOTTOMS OF BEER BARRELS AND ADD SPICES TO IT.
It's gross...in my humble opinion.
