I, personally, enjoy this new style you've done. The shading has more of a dynamic push than it did before. It does more than make the character stand out, it gives a greater depth to the light. Such as, I can see the sun on her left. Or a fire. Maybe even the torch of another survivor. Allows the imagination to wander and guess if you go that deeply into it.

Thank you so, so much for the input. I'm glad that the attempt to convey the obscurity of the background came through; as someone who has a lot of issues putting backgrounds to "paper", the fact that what I went for actually came through means the world to me.
Anatomy and shading were another big focus. My poor puppies were so confused when I repeatedly put my palm to my face to remind myself of the similarity in size.
