originally the red things are supposed to be flame. they got screwed up in the sizing process. as for the Oroboros itself, it's more tribal then skullish, and the original meaning of the oroboros was to help alchemests of yester year represent infinity and the renewing cycle of time. from what you posted about the death of earth, I suspect you were thinking of the great serpent Niidhog, who gnaws at the roots of the life tree in norse mythology.
