Years ago, Ral Partha offered miniature sets that represented the same role-playing game character at low, intermediate, and high levels. I thought that was a neat idea, so I've been playing with it recently.
So here's a half-elf ranger as he ages, decides to acknowledge his human heritage more, acquires nicer swords and a better bow, Boots of Striding and Springing, and eventually even a Cloak of Elvenkind to go with his Elf chainmail...

This is sort of a neat idea. Can you do a 3 stage for a multi-classed character? Or what about a Prestige class character?
An elven wizard/Pale master
A Half-Orc Rouge/Assassin?
Etc?
Also, does not a ranger loose his Dual Wielding bonus if he is wearing medium armor like chain mail, rather than light armor?

Okay, this turns out to be a multipart answer;
1. Rangers cannot use their Two Weapon Style if they're wearing medium armor - but since they only get light armor proficiency in 3.5, it's pretty much academic.
2. But, chain mail shirts are considered to be the high end of light armor (+4 AC, and up to +4 Dex bonus) - and trying to convert the old "elfin chain" idea to 3.5 thinking, that knocks out the armor class check penalty.
3. So even though that's okay in the rules, I actually was thinking more 1e/2e style stuff. Rangers were pretty ridiculous in 2e from what I can remember.
Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't thought about doing more 3.5 style "and then they took a prestige class" but it's definitely a cool idea.

Well, if I can offer more ideas, I'd also suggest you up the sketches to 4 stage instead of 3. You still have the low level, intermediate level, and high level, and finally you have the power gamed lvl20+ World of war craft absurd looking level who can flatten castles with a flick of his wrist :P, You know, carrying the class out to it's most illogical extreme. Don't everyone's D&D games end with the acquisition of a sword that can cut the world in half, or a bow that fires minarets instead of arrows, or armor made out of the bones of the earth and trimmed with dragon's hides?
