Ok, this is a wierd one to follow up with after the pic of the Freddy and Jason action figures, but here it is.
This, is a Custom Herbie that was originally built by Johnny Lightning. When i got it back on 2003...it looked ok, but I never felt it really captured Herbie quite right, sooooo,, when Johnny Lightning started to release this same car in different paints, I jumped at the chance to swap some parts. What you see here is the last 4 years and $50.00 of an obsession to make this car better.
the first thing I did was buy two other bugs. One was a black custom Beetle and one was a standard burgandy Beetle. I got both of them and proceeded to take parts from them. I used the black Beetle's rims and double wide tires and combined them with parts from Herbies rims. I then cut and sanded and drilled and glued and painted till I got Herbie rims that were wide enough to fir the extra wide racing tires. Then, I put them back on the chassis of the custum bug because it has a race exhaust system that looked cooler. XD I then took burgundy Beetle's VW logo hub caps and glued them onto Herbies new widened out rims. See, in the original 1969 film, Herbie was sporting no VW logos o his hubcaps or even on his hood. Why? TM logos i guess *shrugs*. Next, I took Herbies interior apart and painted it grey. Herbies interior in the movies was grey, but Johnny Lightning made it white...paper white...for no reason. so, I fixed it. Next, I took the custoum Beetle's seats. these seats were red on a red interior, so I painted them grey and put them in Herbie...Racing Car = Racing Seats. I also stole the custom bugs steering wheel for Herbie.
I then put the black running boards from the burgundy Beetle on Herbie. Which replaced the ones you see in the before pics which are painted white. Lastly, I ordered some Shabo Good Year tire decals and added a much needed detail.
It's MUCH better than before, but it still needs some work. I still have to paint Herbs dash board in grey, but first I want to add a tachometer and oil pressure, teperature, and battery power lever guages to the dash. I also want to make a roll bar and add some decals to the side rear windows that make it more like a real race car.
Anyway, that's my obsession. I sure hope someone out there likes it ^_^;

yes i was when i was little i would buy these little plastic bugs the i would race them while watching the movies, the one with Bruce Campbell was on a couple of days ago that ok i love the originals though. I Hate what disney did with the car though in the new one with Lindsay Lohan it was FUCKING HORRIBLE SO HORRIBLE in fact a little piece of me died that day they made Herbie too much Alive and they stuck him in a nascar film WTF WERE THEY THINKING...and for the RECORD LINDSAY LOHAN SUCKS!!
They should've never fucked with a classic
They should've never fucked with a classic
Disney had yet again bitched out their orginal movie bases in place for modern soft corner non offencive bitchy mother avoidance cheery crap, It wasent worth the movie ticket so I didnt go, and changed the channel after watchin most of it when it came out on the disney channel. That it was in nascar was an atrosity in its self, nuff said. The only rapture I found was that a robot raped the new car on the show Robot Chicken, as lohan was all piss drunk, I couldnt quit laughing.

oh i loved Herbie goes to Mente Carlo. i loved that it was a more serious racing type Love Bug film. *sigh* i miss those old days. the worse part of the new film...was the eye lids and movable bumper and wierd cartoon voicie noises herbie made...XP i hated that. there was SO much more that could have been done with that film...i get the idea tat the directors hands were rather tied with those compromises though. she did try alot harder than that god-awful film in 96 XD
thanks! ^_^ I love that little car. you know that the Love Bug was the first film i had ever seen as a child? i still have alot of things i want to do to this one. i still need to paint the dashboard grey and add a tachometer, oil pressure gage, temperature gage, and battery gage cluster, add a roll bar, five point racing harnesses, and i want to replace the 53's to the correct font. these are grossly inaccruate. XP but eventually. ^_^
I don't work for the site, the theme just can be found there, thats all. also, herbie was a '63 you can't get the 2003 and make it look like a 63 unless you get new front and rear aprons, fenders, hood, decklid...etc...
you'd need a pre-67 Beetle to make a herbie replica, and even then you'd have your work cut out for you. just as a suggestion, don't make a herbie repllica that looks nothing like herbie (like using an '03 mexibug with no modifications to make it look older) because, while it's your car so I can't judge, many of us in the VW world consider that a little bit of waste of bug. there are enough badly created replicas out there, no need for more. make it good!

i didn't say i was going to make an 03 look like a 63. where did you read that? but that's besides the point, i said the mexican made beetle up till that year still LOOKED like the classic beetle. the 03 mexican (the last year of that body style FYI) looked like a 60's. BUT i don't want a replica of Herb, i want to make an updated unique Herb. i want my own Herbie. you don't HONESTLY think that i spent this much time working on a custom Herbie model without a life long obsession with the car, and without doing any research on said car first do you?
i don't want to take a VW and do EXTENSIVE work to make it look like Herbie as a 63 beetle, i want to take the 93 or 03 Mexican and make it into a white racing beetle that actually CAN go fast and hold it's own in those "run what you brung" races and then add the stripes and bubble gum circles with 53's to it similar to herbie. the rest of the VW world can keep their opinions to themselves if they don't like a car that's not pre 67 and decorated like herbie, if they think my Herbie is a bad replica, too bad, it will still suck the doors off of their replicas.

nice! my apologies for doubting you. I'd love to see what you have in mind... tech specs etc... I'm sure you can find a post 68 model somewhere to modify to look like what you're thinking about doing, I appreciate a good custom as much as the next guy, and actually, I always wanted to know what a "real" modern interpretation of herbie was like...(that last movie had lots of fail in it)
oh god yes, that last film was terrible. i liked SOME of their takes on Herbs updated look, but that "street racer" herb was atrocious in execution. too bad too, cause the production designs looked really slick!
lol, no problem, i didn't mean to sound glib in my last response. but yeah, i'm going pure custom on this one. what i really wanna do is "Herbie's younger faster little brother" really. more like a...like a starting over again concept based on if they wanted to tell Herbie's story all over again, only now instead of continuing from the original films a s a sequil. i had to put alot of thought into this though, i didn't want to make it unbelievable, like, herb in nascar *pukes*
mainly, i'm basing this on a car i had read about in "Dune Buggles and Hot VW's" magazine. there isa guy in Germany that built a 73 super beetle into...well, basically a Porche Carerra. his was based on the "ultra light" concept so there was some carbon fiber involved and a very spartin interior, but the over all look, the stance the suspension system the engine mods, all amazing work and what i'm basing these mods i want off of. it's a good starting point i think only, i still need some creature comforts XD. his was all orange, ui of course want white and besides that, i rather like the Mexican Beetles bumper mounted turn signals, and the Mexican Beetles were the same over all body style of the 73 super beetle till 03, there was a special edition in 03 for the last run where they did a "retro" decoration with a flat wind screen like the 60's cars. i think i would want the wrap around super style for this myself. anyway, it's a newer over all chassis to start with, AND i get the fun of saying it's a 93 or 03 beetle and have people look at me funny. as a plus, the car would be exactly 30 or 40 years Herbie's junior. i'd LOVE to have this project done in 09 for the Love Bug films 40th anniversary, but really, there just is no funding for this yet. alas, i will have to wait. right now, i am still researching engines and engine manufacturers to look at what would be able to sustain high speeds over long race periods and still be street legal as well.

Can't believe I missed this back when it was first posted. That's a mighty nice bit of resto you've done there.
If you're going to be a complete maniac about accuracy though, you've got a couple more things you cans till do to it, though:
1) The blue racing stripe needs to be a darker, more navy colored blue.
2) The 53 numbers should be replaced with the correct font.

some detail tips
cheers!

thanks Chris! ^_^ yeah and i still need to add the roll bar XD ideally what i'd like to do is replace the 5's with decals with the accurate font. it's just REAL tough to find good ones in the right scale. i would probably have to use acetone to remove the old gum balls so you can't see them through the decals too. as for the blue stripe...that one would need masking tape and a good airbrush XD
thanks for the link too! i'll check that out! ^_^
thanks again Chris! =D
