I really, really like Smaug's quadrupedal design

i kinda feel cheated by Peter jackson (not ranting about the picture btw :P)... smaug is a dragon not a wyvern... if he was one he would of been called Smaug the mother fudging wyvern! its just lazy development teams who dont their lore! GRRR people need to remember the rule: 4 legs 2 wings, dragon. 2 legs 2 wings its a wyvern!!! its simple!

but wyverns don't breathe fire, Smaug did so at best he could be called a bipedal dragon

wyverns do breath fire (depending on the lore)

and they are still part of the dragon family, look it doesn't really matter if a dragon is bipedal or quadroped or not, its still a dragon just a different subspecies

Well it kinda does, it's like saying that a border collie and a poodle are the same thing... The point I'm making is that producers have been cramming the wyvern design down the publics necks since early 2000s making them believe that's the correct design and completely ignoring the 4 legs 2 wings rule. Such examples were wyverns are called dragons are reign of fire, skyrim and now the New hobbit film... This one is particularly annoying as there are already dragons in the lotr fluff (games workshop have a model for them and theres one in war of the north) one program that got it right was Merlin on BBC 1, voiced and motion captured by John hurt :D

and depending on the lore dragons can be basically everything like serpents, chimera, wyverns..

dragons just have a lot of possible forms... most of french dragon for example are chimera like monster like La tarasque, a dragon with the head of a lion the neck of a snake, the body of a bull, six legs of a bear and a scorpion's tail.

there is a very small minority of person that would insist that Smaug isn't technically a dragon.
