Originally they didn't even have onboard powercores, and HAD to stay in contact with floors to tap other power sources. I think that's why they had that flat-bottom design.

Even with the advent of the flying daleks, I have yet to see one sideways, giving me the impression that they do need to remain upright. Possibly that little squishy jellyfish thing inside needs some semblance of stability. But then again, when the good guy wins regularly based on sheer luck, plot devices, and clap your hands and fairies come back to life, logic isn't the strongest argument there is.
On the subject of faeries, Yeah, I must admit, i was deeply disappointed that the power of parenthood can make Cybermen's heads explode. Sure it's a powerful thing, but when they brought the cybermen back, killing them w/ emotions was a horrible way to die- Now it's become a joke. o.O
I've been wondering about the whole staying upright thing too- which is why, just ONCE i wanna see someone tip a Dalek! To quote Startrek Enterprise: 'I couldn't help but notice you Enhanced DNA doesn't stop you from falling on your own butt!'
