Breaking my game fanart fast for a PSA:
Enjoyed Melee, but felt like Brawl was too floaty and Metaknight mains ruined everything? Then I have good news for you! The Project M Backroom (PMBR) is a team of professionals that have spent the last four years modding Brawl. They made every character as enjoyable as possible, tightened the controls up, AND added lots of frosh content!
You only need a 2GB SD card and a copy of Brawl to play it on a Wii, and it's all free, so what are you waiting for?!

I thought you were a bit aware of the competitive scene since you mentioned the PMBR ;)
BR stands for BackRoom, which is hidden forums in Smashboards for tournament hosts and knowledgeable players to discuss about competitive Smash. There's one for Melee and one for Brawl (not sure if 64 has one).
Originally, the BRs also suggested rulesets for tournament hosts to use, but several issues with Brawl (Meta Knight and stagelists) eventually led to us refraining from doing those, and instead just release the tier list and matchup chart projects. :)

I just entered the tourney scene after the Smash Bros documentary came out. I've put in my hours to play, but I've had no little-person exposure to the metagame.
Thanks for educating me on this! I've always wondered where tournament regulations were birthed. In 2001 I bet it was a nightmare navigating this international phenomenon!

There are tournaments? Is there online play, too, by any chance? All we knew about it was "There's apparently a cool Smash Bros mod that makes it so (Friend) will stop picking Meta Knight, for crying out loud, I can't handle it anymore."
I see there's a "WiFi-Safe" on the site -- would that be what I would want for online play? I want to get into Smash again after not playing it for so long because of Brawl. I mean, I'm trash at it, but it's fun, even to lose.

You just missed the biggest Smash Bros. tournament ever to happen, actually. It was last weekend in New Jersey, at Apex 2014.
Yes, the "WiFi-Safe" version is for online play, but it's recommended you download the full version for local play and practices. if your connection is strong enough, you can best tournaments from online practice! Once saw a Zelda player that built his skill specifically by playing online.

We got a pretty crazy connection, so I think I could? I'll poke around, see what happens. Though I wager it's filled with pros. Not that it matters to me, but my win/loss ratio will be pitiful~
Figured it out a little bit after I posted, though -- doesn't matter anyways. Don't have the right SD card. :( Maybe I'll run to the store tomorrow.
It'd be great to play a match or two against you, though by the sounds of it, you're probably fairly good. Heh. That is, if you have the online version.

You can practice on me, then. I specialize in rolling off of ledges to my death with Yoshi eggs, fumbling around with Bowser smashes, and being an absolute annoyance with any Star Fox character (I used to main Fox in Melee, I think it was, because his speed and movement was perfect for me). Maybe you can even learn a thing from me. I'll have you know I make my Yoshi egg roll suicides look incredibly easy, but it's actually quite complicated. I'm willing to spill my secrets.
I found an SD adapter for a 2GB micro I have, so I'll have to try it at some point this week. We should definitely try some online, I say, if you ever want to play but don't have anyone around locally to play with.
