I've found one here http://realgunsstore.com/ for $480 USD in a variety calibers from .22 to .44 magnum and they a have a 90 day layaway payment plan.
AR-15 is a princess gun with so many moving parts and stuff, not to mention more accessories than a barbie doll dream house x3!! O:
The M1 heritage I'd argue is one of the best combat rifles ever constructed.
Jokes aside now though, I chose it for zombie for specific reasons O:
1) The .308 and 7.62 NATO round are interchangeable, giving more ammo options (similar to how a 5.56 can use .223, though not in reverse O: ) Not to mention very common to find
2) The .308 is a larger caliber, meaning more stopping power. While stopping power isn't for zombies, the hunting and defense from human aspects really shine with this.
3) Simple gas cylinder, very low maintenance required (including cleaning) Battle tested design for well over 50+ years.
4) Less than 10 lbs. so pretty light~ easy to travel
5) Total barrel length is 18 inches, so easy to maneuver in tighter conditions (Though it's effective range is somewhat affected)
6) I've a thing for M1's x3
In the end though, it comes down to preference. I'll most likely own an AR-15 at some point and will probably love it xD

When it comes down to it, I look at these points, maneuverability; how fast can I clear corners, effectiveness at long medium and close ranges, magazine size, and how many rounds I can put down range in a hurry, I myself would go for an M4 since I'm military it's no problem to get everything needed for that, but on the civilian side of things, the AR is a good choice
And it does an excellent job at what it does, most certainly. The main differences for what I chose is less moving parts (Occham's Razor), multi purpose (.308 is still a standard if not the standard for large game hunting in North America), and, as I said, Loooove the M1 line. I'm kidn of a history geek about WWII so the M1 and the 1911 are my go to for classics x3
There are several M4/AR-15 models I've been looking at myself though ^^
