Erinnert mich irgendwie an eine Weiterentwicklung von Schmerzenskerzen. o.o
The film was an interesting turn for Godzilla definitely. One of the most brutal villains he had faced in the series until the very next year when they released the first Gigan film and brought bloodshed into the mix. I think it was kind of a way for the filmmakers to turn Godzilla back into the cautionary tale of mankind breeding it's own destruction to the devastation we wreak on our environment. First Godzilla with our misuse of nuclear technology and then Hedorah with our complete disregard to our planet with our trash.
I think if this is any indication of how they're handling it, it's gonna be fierce.

Hells yeah Gedorah! Dunno why he's always voted as one of the lamest Godzilla villains, sure the human side of the movie was horrible but Gedorah was, at least to me, pretty badass and a rather intimidating opponent.
My favorite Godzilla kaiju would have to be Mothra, second would be tricky as I have a lot of favorite underdog kaijus like Kamacuras and Anguirus.

The movie was kinda "not so good", but Hedorah itself is just AWESOME :D I love it's design and it was the most creepy Godzilla Villian ever.
At least to me XD But yeah...the Movie was really really strange. The whole message was...uh What?! And they made Godzilla go Greenpeace.

Pretty much. XD
The movie was supposed to have an environmentally friendly message, yet what ended up happening was that Hedorah was plenty in the way of environmental commentary, the human side of the commentary felt more like cliche'd references to the upper end of the 60s.
And yeah Hedorah is one of the scarier Godzilla enemies, even if they do view him as a lesser Kaiju he's creepy factor and his level of danger due to his pollutant nature make him incredibly dangerous to both Godzilla and the general populace of Japan.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I adore the actual movie itself too!
The whole thing is just this freeze frame of a particular time in Japanese pop culture, with all sorts of really bizarre and wonderful kitschy stuff thrown in there like hippies staging a happening out in the middle of a field (and playing electric guitars despite not having anything to plug them into...) or the club scenes with people wearing fish-head costumes. The musical score is just fab too.
Environmental concerns have always been a big thing for the Japanese since they became industrialized, and Godzilla itself was born in the shadow of the nuclear age. During the 60s and 70s Godzilla sort of became a protector of the Earth however along with Gamera, so they started to fight against alien kaiju who threatened to contaminate the environment in one way or another.
By the way, the guy who designed Hedorah and directed the movie was going to do another one a few years ago that was a spiritual successor to it, a movie in 3D where Godzilla was going to fight a plague-based kaiju made of swarms of locusts or something. Sadly it was canned in favor of another US version.

Guess you are thinking of Raremon - which was inspired by the design of Hedorah. http://bogleech.com/raremon.html
