I always thought Meowth's backstory was kinda sad. Going through all that trouble to learn the human language to impress a girl, and then she just snubbed him anyway. (I might be hazy on the details, it was a loooong time ago).
He's actually one of the most intelligent pokemon, in my opinion, considering that the only other pokemon capable of human speech are either psychic, legendary, or unique in some kind of way. Meowth, on the other hand, achieved it with hard work alone, and yet he's always being under-appreciated by those around him.
I think his story would have turned out completely different if only someone had been there to give him a little love. So sad.
