Bonus points if you get the joke.
I sat there, staring blankly at the television. The flashing images burning themselves into my psyche. Next to me on the couch, curled into a ball, was Leigh. She wore a pair of dingy socks, some baggy jeans, my least favorite, and a t-shirt with a v-neck. Her eyes were glued to her phone. She was waiting for a text message from a friend, while I tried to ignore the fact that I wasn't important nor interesting enough to receive her attention.
I held the game controller in my hand, mindlessly pressing buttons on it, mashing my way through the enemies on-screen, half present as always. I couldn't shake the feeling of being ignored by the woman I cared for. If my feelings were so inconsequential to her, why did I even bother to renew them as time went on?
Suddenly, her face was illuminated by the feint light of her phone, her eyes glancing down and thumbs beginning the dance to respond hastily to the message she had received from whomever was stealing her from me. A slight grimace painting itself across my face, away from her line of sight I'm sure.
"God, I hate guys sometimes." She muttered, loud enough for me to hear, but quiet enough to give off an impression of it being a silent thought.
"Why?" I asked, of course knowing the answer was not one I'd fall for.
