The qí lín is a mythological beast that appears with the imminent arrival or passing of a sage or illustrious and often benevolent ruler. It has different depictions but most consist of a dragon-like head with eyes having thick eyelashes, a mane that always flows upward defying gravity, a beard, and scales on the body ranging either somewhat scaled to totally scaled like a dragon. It's body is equine like and is often depicted as either horse,ox,or even deer with cloven hooves and sometimes fire enveloping the body. Their popularity is known in both Taoist and Buddhist stories ranging from judging a person good or evil, guilty or innocent before the gods to being so benevolent toward all living things that it refuses to walk upon grass and instead walks on clouds and on top of water and it doesn't eat flesh.
