Naturally. Many pokeballs will open to allow the Pokemon to be free, should they be abandoned, or when a trainer dies.
But seeing this, It could ether be an older pokeball without the safety features, or the one trainer was very abusive and Abused his/her pokemon to the point of death and left that poor Pokemon abandoned to let it die. It is kinda sad to see such things.
You opening the pokeball has freed the soul/spirit of the very Pokemon that is now long dead.
