Scales, scales, and more scales
A WIP shot of a model in progress. I've made the scales by 'painting' them with the alt-mask brush on to the masked model, and then inflating the unmasked areas so they are somewhat raised above the body's surface. I swear, this technique is absolutely amazing to me - I am so thankful that I stumbled across it!!

Would it not be more expedient to create alphas of scales of different sizes, then use DragDot strokes to fill out the details? Seems like that would be easier than painstakingly painting masks over large areas like this; I would think it'd be very effective for some detail work but for large swathes like this it seems like a time-eater.
At this point in time, this is somewhat of an exercise, but it also is a mark of obsessive desire to get the accuracy I want, where alphas can appear extremely repetitive and unnatural. I am not very skilled with alpha work just yet, so I'm doing it the...old-fashioned way?
