Hade some slow time at work( working alone cataloging comics) Drew a Lich.
maybe i should do like a dnd beastiary with the monsters i like? Annyway enjoy undead immortal wizard.
In a way i think a Lich is a tragic character, like almost all undead creatures really, at their core lies some great tragic aspects, in the case of the Liches i think its a Fear of death, or rather a fear of the unknown after death that scares them, so they study all their lives to prolong their lives and achive immortality and end up in a state thats more than dead but less than life. They are mostly extremly egotistical, has god complexes and are huge megalomaniacs. , Narcissistic to the etreme and petty. All great character flaws that i think gets amplified after their transformation to undeath because they loose everything that makes a human a human. They go so far in their atempt to keep death away that they rip their souls from their bodies and often they outlive all that once might have amttred to them and all thats left is a petty hatred for evrything they cant have or be and maybe selfhate and regret of what they did.

well i think it whould depend of the fantasy world. the most common and general description of a lich is a wizard, warlock, sorcerer or most commonly a Necromancer who cheats death by placeing his/her soul in an object of great value, a phylacatry thats later hidden away and guarded well , as long as the phylacatry is intact the lich will regerate its body even if its crushed to dust. Only if the vessel of its soul is destroyed will the destruction of the Lich be permenent.
Fun fact Lich comes from a germanic word and it means corpse.

There's a challenge rating 15+... worth at least 25 thousand XP... not counting if it has all it's treasure..
course there's the little matter of those nasty minions and the spells it's capable of.. not counting some innate powers gained from the transformation over the "centuries"... as well as likely at least a few death traps in it's main lair..
no sweat.. *grins*

In the hills, past the wretched abyss
Through the reeking bogs and carrion mists
Up the trail, to the black castle gate
Undead lord is the master of fate
Run and scream with your heart in your throat
Past the drawbridge and over the moat
Tattered robe and yellowed bone
Undead lord on his slaughterhouse throne
Give into fear, all hail the dead
What once was damned has been risen instead
Give into hate, all now are lost
Your ghoul demigod and his black holocaust
All hail the lich king
Heads on pikes on the turret walls
Vollies of thunder and fire he calls
A necromantic maelstrom of lightning and sin
Undead lord and the skeletal grin
Give into fear, all hail the dead
Throne and the crown and the rivers of red
Give into doom, all lost in the dark
Scepter and sword of the hated monarch
All hail the lich king
Ancient evil, crowned corpse mage
Enemies butchered and peasants enslaved
Crying for mercy, you're barely alive
Undead lord, wicked wizard denies
All...hail...the

Liches weren't general undead like most others, they were templated. To become a lich a magic user (arcane OR divine) needed to perform years of profane and taboo research and create a phylactery. You then just transformed, keeping your levels. They weren't undead that could occur from a crime, like ghosts or mohrgs.
Do you read Order of the Stick? If not, then one of the main villain is a lich called Xykon, and there is actually a print-only story that shows how he became a lich.
He did it out of necessity (and a hunger for power), but he sort of defined his life as a human by taste, and once he turned lich, he lost all sense of taste, which pretty much made one of the defining truths about his life obsolete. Understandably, he was pretty bitter about it when he discovered it, to the point where he murdered the next person to speak to him.

I guess the amount of tragic depends on the individual lich - those that did it out of fear, while not having the personality for it (best example would be hedonists), and are too afraid of losing themselves to rewrite the enchantment that now constitutes their brain, are indeed tragic.
On the other hand those that did it for power, or simply to gain unlimited time for research, and have either erased the parts of their personality that cared for the matters of mortals or never cared much for these things in the first place (the same ascetic type that may become a monk), seem like they could be quite happy or at least content with their existence. Their worries might be more along the lines that most deities do not look kindly upon them, last but not least because liches are some of the very few indiviuals capable of gathering the arcane knowledge and resources to turn themselves into gods, if it is at all possible. So their main probem might be that said gods sick adventurers on them.
On the other hand, the same kind of personality, be it engineered or innate, leads to all the character flaws you listed, as it either by nature or design has no counterweight to them. Except if the lich is very lawful or good, and with the lawfulness for example applying to a paladin that may choose undeath to be able to further protect the mortals' realm.

The best lich of all is Nagash from Warhammer. He fits the bill as the perfect lich, megalomaniacal, wants to become a god and has achieved that, though he is now a weaker god, and all his power is based on knowledge of magic that he created - a dark genius whose lust for power and ultimate domination caused him to sacrifice his humanity and mortal body to become immortal. He has caused mass genocide upon his own people, turning his own land of Nehekhara into a barren wasteland devoid of life just so he could turn all the people into mindless undead minions, and now in the End Times he has devoured the essence of two gods and assembled the greatest army of the dead ever seen, all so that he can achieve ultimate ascension and perfection and become a true god.
I like liches because I like evil megalomaniacs; Megatron from Transformers, the Lich King from Warcraft, Skeletor, Nagash, all of them are deeply gratifying to read about and engage with because their desire for dominance and absolute control resonates with my own life, and I think they resonate with others too - the desire to become important, more important than anyone else because of a deep-rooted, arrogant and toxic belief in oneself is the trademark characteristic of all the greatest people in history. In that sense you could say that all the greatest people in history were megalomaniacs, and many people desire control over a world they cannot control, to have power and influence over others to become immortal through their memory. The lich represents that innate human desire, and that's why I love them so much.
