‘Ooooh… attend this record of Sweeney Todd, the way he looked before he went odd, for the time in the furnace proved such a pain, his posture will never be the same again…’
This was something I started working on over the weekend, after I got itchy fingers and really wanted to go back to trying my hand at sculpting.
The problem was that I literally had only a small blob of Super Sculpey left from my previous sculpting endeavours, so managed to get just his torso done while I waited for the new packet to arrive (which I found to be annoyingly stiff, thus hinting that it was not fresh and had been kept in storage for months… seriously people, learn from my mistake, be sure to check your Sculpey is soft before buying it!)
Anyway, so here I spent all too many hours crafting all the little details from the inside out (I generally work on the muscles first, then add the clothing, then all the finer details such as buttons, buckles, eyebrows, teeth and hair etc… last) only to have everything go disastrously wrong in such typical fashion at the very end of the process.
Despite having an internal wire armature, a solid foil base AND being rigged up to a sturdy metal support, he still somehow managed to fall flat on his face in the oven. GAH! So there goes his hand, ankles and a huge chunk of his hair. His tail is suddenly left half hanging off (and now I find his head is too). This is definitely what you call Sod’s Law.
Btw, these photos were taken just before he went into the oven, because I always think it wise to keep a record of such things just in case they get damaged… and in this case, they are all I have left of my efforts. Poor Sweeney… he would have looked great painted, but alas, it was not to be.

Oh man, this is so cool! Really terrible what happened though... but at least you have before pictures. There's so much detail in the clothes and life in his face.
On a semi-unrelated note, are you ever open for (2D) commissions? As you are the only artist who does furry themed Sweeney art justice on this site, imo. :)

Aww, thank you. I must admit that I was rather upset when I saw the damage, but yes, I still have the pictures... at least.
And the answer to that would be yes, it's just that I rarely ever open for them (very much lost in my own little world when it comes to art, lol). :D Just out of interest, what would you be interested in?

A two character piece of my character and a friend's (
tauakhera's) character as Lovett and Todd. He and I are planning to tour the con circuit as Lovett and Todd based on the Burton movie (as they're most recognizable - we will play them with our own interpretations though, no WAY am I going to play HBC's Lovett) and a pic of our characters (a westie and a lion, respectively) as the characters would be awesome. :D Of course hey don't necessarily need to be based on Burton's look, because you do such great interpretations of the pair yourself...

Ha ha, really? Oooh, that sounds like so much fun! Does this mean that you'll have the crazy hairdos and so on? :D
Ah, that would be so much fun to work on, I don't see why not, but I also have to ask you what you were looking for when it comes to the type of artwork. Full colour? A sketch? Background? Digital? Traditional? =)

I know I had every one of my sculptures back in the day explode killing others. I can't get fresh sculpy anywhere and it ticks me off LOL. I have been wanting to make a sculpture, I feel I am pretty good at it. However I can't even get good sculpy to work with either around here...
Awesome piece though had everything worked out.

dude, i am so sorry to hear that happened to you. :C i've never had sculpts pull that on me...yet.
do you have any larger versions of these pics? i want to get a closer look at all your awesome detailing.
and on a slightly related note, when you use one of those separate wire things to hold up the sculpture when working do you take it out when youre done? and how?

Ah, no worries... I've been through all the stages now; anger, denial and now just... 'bleh'. LOL! XD
Oh, yes... you should be able to see the larger images by clicking 'download' to the left hand side of the submission on DA. If not then I'll email it to you. http://leopreston.deviantart.com/ar.....ished-84263237
As for the wire support, yes. Literally, the thing stays in even as it is baked and then it's removed at the end. All it is a pole stuck in the figure's back. When the sculpture has hardened, you can remove it by just sliding it out and then cover the hole with some sort of filling. I usually just stuff some more Sculpey in there and stick it in the oven for a bit longer (very professional, I know... lol!) :D
