Shortly after I created the character Stargazer, I wanted to involve him in a series of comic strips. One of which involved him answering a question posed to him.

I knew it had to be a child asking, as the question was very simple.

So, I thought, okay, he needs to be a bear, like Stargazer....probably a nephew. Why a nephew? Tradition I suppose.

Then I needed a name.

Hmmmm....lessee....Stargazer is a bear astronomer....there are two constellations of bears, Ursa Major, and Ursa Minor, otherwise know as the Big and Little....

DIPPER!!! PERFECT!!!

Dipper has grown 'way beyond his original purpose, obviously.
