I haven't posted a WIP in a very long time, and people often ask to see in-progress shots. This seemed like a good one to show, since it's pretty simple. The characters shown here are from my new story 'Off The Beaten Path' - http://www.furaffinity.net/view/11578732
You can kind of see how I build up color here. The bold linework will eventually go away almost entirely, and I'll continue to build upon the lowlights and highlights in the fur. I've been focusing primarily on lighting over the last year. I have a long way to go, but I finally feel like I'm making progress.
I work in Photoshop and use custom brushes I've personally made to do my fur. If you've got any questions, ask away. I'll see if I can be of help. I don't have the time to do a tutorial, as some folks have been asking for, but you're always welcome to stop by on my streams.
This will be scrapped soon.

If I could ask anything, it would be what brushes you use, or how you set them up. I do full fur texture in some of my pictures, but it takes ages and ages with the brushes I use. Mine are basically tweaked PS6 brushes.
And this is looking good so far. Intrigued to see what it looks like finished.

May not be exactly what you're looking for, but this person has some nice ones: http://fav.me/d5rcqds And the settings seem to already be done up to where it's where it needs to be. I HATE doing fur, I've tried the "fur fluffy" brush and that one at least makes quick work of it. Haven't played with the other yet.
My fur brushes are all variations on one scheme which is fairly easy to explain. I create a one inch by one inch file, first, or somewhere around that size. Really doesn't matter just so long as the res isn't tiny. Then I take a standard circular brush and put down a series of randomly-spaced dots in a line. Usually try and making the spacing pretty random as to keep the brush more natural looking. Go with six or so dots, no more than that or the brush gets too dense. Afterwards, I turn the canvas into a brush (tutorial here on how to make a brush - http://www.photoshopessentials.com/...../make-brushes/
After I have my brush made, I go to the brush properties window and change the spacing to NONE, so when the brush is moved it created a series of lines, not dots. . . and then I change the opacity to 'pen pressure', a standard for almost all brushes you want to use while painting.
If any of this has confused you, hop on a stream some time and I'll just show you.

Ahh, I see. Okay, thanks, I'll have to try that a couple times and see if I can make something decent. If I hit a roadblock, I'll take you up on that stream offer sometime. It does usually help to see it.
One other question though- If theyre all in like, a vertical line or something, how to you adjust it for fur patterns laying in line with the dots?

Yes. Stream all the way!
I had never worked with brushes, and I got a first glimpse of how the brushes and the layers and the multiply layer thingues worked from your streams.
Tried it on Guimp just to make things more interesting and I got... something.LOL But yes, I got how the principle worked in no time. Now I only need to learn how to draw *rolleyes*
So that is. Thanks for the lessons.

After the resent remarks and very defensive attitude from puck along with a few other things... I think these two are far more than just friends. ;) Personally I think neither of them could live with out the other very long. (Think of a old couple that's been together many years, one dies and the other gives up.) They may have their differences but it's clear they care deeply for each other. Even if Ransom would never admit it. ;)
Yes, of course ^-^ I've been stuck with traditional for a couple months, and I am noticing a few changes for the better. I hope the same for my digital work when I'm able to do that again. Thank you for taking time from your schedule to reply vuv I know you're probably busy almost all the time. Keep up your amazing work, in the meantime! I'm sure everyone can't wait to see/read the next chapter of OTBP and page of Red Lantern c: and don't forget to take breathers when you feel you need them!
