This is my second fully sized yarn tail (the other one was for Boyfriend, and it was a bit of a disaster) and I have to say, the cheaper yarn seems to work a lot better for this than the simply soft, though the simply soft is more like real fur.
This is roughly 18" long, made with Red Heart yarn, and took about... six hours? I wasn't really measuring, and the work was spread over several days, but I think so. Yarn tails are very time-consuming, it turns out... though this one went MUCH faster than the first.

Oh my. I don't actually know. Are you brushing it with the kind of needly brush thing you use to get excess fur off of dogs and cats? Are you tying on multiple strands at a time? I did ten here, but my other one I did twenty. Ten took longer, but looked better. Are you sewing and straightening? Because I didn't do either of those, and I think it took a hefty chunk off of the time it took to make it. I kinda like the tendency to curl very slightly, and by the time you've made the yarn into fur, I don't think sewing is really necessary - though I could be wrong.
You're much more persistent than I am! If it had taken me THAT long, I think I would have given up after a couple of days! Kudos to you!

That might be why it took so long. What I did was use the distance from my fingers holding the end naturally to my elbow, and then from there flipped it and basically made a loop until I had ten strands, and then cut the ends of the loops. I don't know if this is making any sense at all... But it only took me a couple of minutes to get a set of strands.
