So this was one of the number of sketches that ultimately filled my notebook for my Biology of Sharks and Rays lab and class that I took this past Fall. I ended up really liking this one in particular. It's drawn from a real specimen, we had a few juvenile bull shark heads in our lab from a previous study on bite force done by our graduate TA. As part of the lab we had to skin the head to reveal the muscles underneath, and this took over an hour....shark skin is incredibly tough and slicing through it without damaging the underlying muscle structure was in a word, tedious. The abbreviations stand for:
POV= Pre-orbital Ventral
POD= Pre-orbital Dorsal
QV= Quadrate Ventral
IMD = Intermandibularis
CHD = Coracohyodial
