A wash of heat rolled over us in the harsh breeze. I looked to her with imploring eyes. She was in silhouette. The sky beyond her was a smoldering red with ashes falling around us like black snow.
A streak of red dripped down her face as I tried to reason with her, “You’re free now… It’s…it’s no longer our fight… we can turn away! There’s no sense in fighting a dragon if we don’t have to.”
I could see a few speck of ash enter her lips as she took in a gentle breath and exhaled with a pained sigh. “It wasn’t this beast that burned my youth… and slaying it will not bring anyone I know back… or appease their spirits… or even tell me who I was…” her head lowered as she closed her eyes for a moment.
“But it could do the same to some other little girl, one that may never have a chance to strike back, so I’m making this my fight.”
Her face turned away from me once more, “Run to the nearest town. Warn them. I will try and slow it up the best I can.”
I looked to the rain of fire sweeping towards us, and knew the towns didn’t need any heralds to this doom. She was just giving me my way out. I looked to the broken chains upon my own hands and nodded, this was not how I wanted my freedom.
“I… I will do all I can to help… blessings upon your household.” I whimpered.
“I have no household…” she says softly, turning towards the flames, “But thank you.”

What is left after all that makes you whole is burned away?
Most of the time, it's just the baser desires and emotions; Pain, lust, fear, and rage. And those burnt will in turn come to burn others.
A vicious cycle then comes to be. And many start to think that burning, and being burnt, are all that there is to life.
And yet, every once in a great while, one who was burnt manages to have something ELSE remain, or perhaps even come into being...
Something no one can really describe. This leads them to do something very different.
Nice piece! Keep it up.
