They are expensive, yes. But I personally would never want to use another tablet again. :3
Wacom tablets are very good in general (also the smaller ones / regular ones). The new models are always very expensive (though worth it), so you could also look for models from last year (Cintiq 12", 13" or 21"), or maybe used ones. They are still not cheap, but often a lot more affordable. :3

I had the chance to try it (Companion), and I have to admit I am surprisingly happy with it. The surface and pen work very well, the buttons on the side of the tablet are very handy (you can setup your own menus for them), and even Windows 8 is kinda nice to use once you get used to it. I sometimes have a few troubles with the drivers - but that's actually a Wacom thing in general (not related to the Compantion). I really think that thing is awesome. :3
I won this print at confuzzled 2014 in the art auction and I love this picture so so much. Once I get a nice frame he will be getting pride of place on my living room wall. This is the perfect souvenir of my first ever furry convention and I just want to thank you for putting this piece up in the auction. I will be keeping a close eye on when you are open for commissions as I would still love a set of custom mood badges from you at some point...(yes, I'm that guy who was pestering you about that in the dealers den :P )
thank you one again and I look forward to seeing what you have on offer at next years cf
