She's a hairless fancy rat.

and age?

She turned a year old in December. She was a feeder-bin rat though, and her health has always been bad...

this usually happens.
many of mine that were that way became tumorous.

the ones i bred at home tho lived almost 4 years.

i understand the pain.

as well, most vets will not help.
unless its a specialty vet and those are extremely pricey and not really worth the thousands of dollars.

My vet is fairly kind but they're not very specialized in rats. Just this past week they finally agreed that she had mycoplasma flare-ups and agreed to give perpetual antibiotic refills. There are no rat specialists anywhere where I live...

I think it might be an abscess by how fast it happened. Praying it's not a ZGT because then I have to euthanize... I won't make her suffer that...

that was the day before yesterday. today it's a bit bigger and there's more redness, like it's coming to a head. Hoping it's an abscess...

its is hard to soft?
kinda squishy?
warm to the touch?
does it feel moveable

rubbery but firm, not noticeably warm, not sure if movable or not. She doesn't like it being touched, obviously..

warmth would indicate a tumor.
possilbe abscess (like in my mouth currently)
poke it with a clean needle and try to drain it!

Alright. Later I'll do a warm compress and do my best. Mostly, she's being very fidgety. I wish I could calm her down, because I don't want to make any wrong moves.

thanks for giving me some hope. I kinda went to worst case scenario and was freaking out. she's my baby and my first rat so I'm scared to lose her in such an awful way.
Seeing as her health is actually on an upward turn and how fast it came out of nowhere right after a bad UTI then I bet it IS an abscess. will post updates tomorrow.

Alright, ttyl. I do my best to help out. My dog went through the same thing and it finally went away after a week or so.

Mostly I feel intense guilt when having to put an animal down... I feel like there's more I could do, more I could have done, and then I'm never sure when it's time. Honestly, it makes me feel like a killer even if you have to relieve suffering.

i worked as a vet tech and have been there to put animals down
and i just know that they are put down to end the suffering
and they are in a better place
and i will rejoice knowing they were in mine.
cherish the good, dont get sad cause they are gone.

Have you tired poking it with a sterile pin? If its an abscess, it should go down.

I'll compress it later and give it a shot if she calms down.

I really hope Momo will be ok. As someone who has Ocd and Depression this is very very well done and powerfull. Thank you for this amazing piece of relatablness :)Cause yeah I get dark thoughts 24/ 7 stuck in my head. So this has imediatly become one of my faves Sal :)

I had a kitty who i took in and took care of... she developed sumthing similar and had similar thoughts.. i noticed it maybe a week or 2 before it ..ended. it barely grew over those 2 weeks, and i made an appointment for her to go in. and hopefully get it taken care of. but.. on the weekend before she was due for the appointment.. it grew much faster.. and on a sundey it exploded.. it literally popped. and icky puss had to be cleaned off her, and the place she was sleeping in at the time.. it smelled like death/road kill.. it was disgustingly horrible.. and since it was a sundey, the vet was closed.. so i cleaned the wound myself.. and took her in the next dey. they stitched her up with a tube to drain any fluids in that area.. she had to have a cone to avoid her from playing with the tube and stitches. but she recovered jus fine. the scariest part was hearing the pop. and realizing what it was. and after it popped - before i could get her to the vet, she was a lot better, prolly due to no longer having that sore pressure on her side. she was much more lively. if that is the case with momo, keep it clean and hopefully everything will be okay. I rilly hope it isnt a tumor. but without getting it checked (and paying a lot of moneys for it..) it's hard to tell what it might be. if yew notice it growing rapidly. jus be aware it may explode... and stink.. but if that is the result.. clean up that wound and momo should start recovering. *sends loves to Momo*

Because of the speed this is growing, I suspect an abscess... in which case, yes, I'll have to clean it if it pops. I'm thinking of trying a compress on her...
luckily right now she's on antibiotics (really strong ones too) and an anti-inflammatory for her myco. It should help combat the infection.

aye, i hope she can handle this struggle. i'd like to hear a good ending to this event. x3

Oh no I'm sorry to hear :( Unfortunately female rats seem to be tumor prone moreso than males. I have had female rats for several years myself. I hope you're able to get care for her.
