I'm curious, after those five years in a coccoon how can it tell it's owner and descendants apart from a complete stranger? I mean a lot can happen in those five years and the owner might pass away in the meantime not having had a chance or much of a chance to introduce any relatives.

Scent mostly, they have a remarkable scent memory and decendants will smell similar to thier previous owner enough that they will retain thier loyalty.
