It's the only con I go to. It's pretty much my summer vacation every year. And as much as I bitch about the youngsters, I still have a good time.

If it's your first time, quite likely.

Alot of it comes from kids being OMG ON THEIR OWN for the first time and surrounded by people who share their hobby whereas they normally maybe only have one or two local friends at most who're into it. So it's a real rush of euphoria when you're new to it.

Oh yeah, it's a whole lot of fun! Just make sure to act responsibly. Make sure you eat REAL FOOD (my first year I got awful stomach pains from going to long without eating), when traveling out in Baltimore make sure to do it in a group (especially at night), be respectful of the convention center/hotel property, don't over spend on junk in the dealer's room (the amount of kids panhandling for cash to get back home on the last day is pathetic), HAVE WATER, etc.

I went to Otakon once, back in '04. My first time there was like your most recent. XP I was basically meh'd to death. Guess it didn't click with me. Though I'll admit, I went because some friends said I just "had" to go and would love it. While I enjoy anime as much as the next guy, I guess I don't care for much beyond the actual animation. To each their own.
On a side note, I'm scared to see either future us at a con. ;p

My plans for the con I'm going to:
Day 1: Dress as a G-Man from the game Psychonauts. Will make lots of props that the g-men use in the game. And I'll probably spend a lot of time standing in heavy-traffic areas of the con area, doing some of the stupid motions that they do while quoting the retarded things they say in the game.
A quote that is sure to be well-accepted: "Look at that woman's breasts. They're large."
... I can imagine saying that and getting chased around the room by some chick in a Sailor-Moon costume.

Day 2 (or 3. Or 2 AND 3): Dress as Loboto from the same game: Psychonauts. Carry around a brain prop I bought; Pose for pictures with a bunch of people, pretending to have stolen their brains.

Oh God, should have heard me at my first con. It wasn't even an anime con, just a general dork fest where animu had been let in and had taken over in a matter of... one convention? So what I babbled about wasn't even the sort of thing they had there (screenings? Oh, you mean the dinky TV in the corner?).


Some day next year when I am 18 I'll make plans to travel and stay at a real anime convention and it'll probably be weeaboo spazzgasms all over again. Until then I shall cringe this month and hopefully in October also at the people who show up all in the same poorly made or bought-off-eBay costume and buy Pocky at three or four times the price you can get it in Chinese grocery stores (like, £1 for a box that'd cost 35p elsewhere).


It's amazing how almost all of us start off like this though, even with the generation gap or whatever.

Depends what you're looking for. Otakon's the second largest anime con in the US, so if you don't mind BIG it's the way to go.

The transition from "FUCKING AWESOME OVERLOAD BFFFFFFFT" to "...whatev, cool" sucks.
