How did you make engraved mugs?

I've found that strong directional lighting coming from the side is what lets you get good photos of engraved glass. I would often play around with positioning a hand-held light until I got it looking good. I would also often opt for a non-black colored background to keep the photo less dark overall. (I used to work at a laser engraving store, and had to photograph a lot of engraved glasses over time.)
