DRAW LOTS OF ORIGINAL ART!
A quick comic I made right on the spot. xD A thought came back to my head from some artist confessions on Tumblr about them being pissed or annoyed that fanart (from games/shows/other) gets more attention than original art. Of course it does! A lot more people know what you are drawing then!

But those who watch you because you drew fan art will be there expecting you to draw the fan art. It's not good to draw a lot of fan art to try to make your fanbase grow, but your main goal is to have your original art to be the spotlight... since that's not what the people watched you for. D: Wouldn't it mean more to have people watch you because of your original art if that's what you're wanting?
For me personally, there aren't many times that I wonder 'what my watchers want to see'. I think that above all, a gallery is a way to share things that I want with people to see. If my watchers appreciate me, then they will understand for example that I wanted to draw original art instead of fanart. I think that most of the watchers in someone's gallery appreciate the art more than the content of a picture @-@!
As someone who started out doing fan art: it's no guarantee of a fan base. When I made the switch from fanart to drawing lots of birds there was little to no support from previous fans, this was a big factor in moving to FA and getting away from fanart in general.
It did help me feel supported while I improved my skills though!
