..Personally I never saw valentines as a massive deal, single's awareness day, or THE DAY WHAT YOU MUCH SUBMIT CHOCOLATES/LOVE/FLOWERS UNTO A SOMEONE, but more of an optional reminder that there are people in this lifetime that are special to you in any number of ways, and you have the option to dote on them if you want. :>
Does it have to be one day out of a year? nope
Does it have to be just your significant other/crush? Also no!
Why not take the day to voice some small appreciation for ANYONE you hold dear, send an anonymous JUICEY-ass love-letter to your best friend (secretly! like... get another friend to write it n everything! X'3) JUST for shets n giggles/see what their reaction is! Or share the day with your chosen family of friends and do something nice together~? :3

I rather like your interpretation of this day, a day to appreciate those you love and an excuse to go on a date with someone you especially are fond of.
I've just called this the "Day of Hearts"... because everytime I've see something related to this day, it's just another sex-themed day.. OF HEARTS! ^^;
