A few weeks ago, Santa Ana's star Point Guard, Luukas Hirvonen, sat down with FSPN Magazine for a brief, candid interview. The magazine just hit shelves today, and I don't think anyone was expecting what came out.
Ben Ridley: First off, I think the question on a lot of peoples minds is, well... how's life after Omar Pink?
Luukas Hirvonen: I loved working with Omar, I learned so much from him and it definitely isn't the same without him around, but I think we're a different team than we we're last year
BR: With the departure of Pink, additions like Ain Ianizzi, Terrell Vora, and the return of Daius Aurelias, the Spectrums seem like a younger team this season. In your opinion, are the you guys struggling because of these drastic changes in the lineup.
LH: When a team has been shaken up this much, there's always going to be an adjustment period. I think we have a lot of talent on this team, and once we gel, it's going to be difficult to stop us.
BR: Ok, switching gears a little, and feel free to stop me if this is a bit too personal, but there have been rumors circulating that you've been seen with teammate Crosby Sutters quite a bit. Some have even speculated that you two are romantically involved. Is this true?
LH: Yeah, that's ... pretty accurate actually.
BR: I wasn't expecting that. How long has this been going on
LH: Since July. During the off-season.
BR: So, is it safe to say that the FBA has another gay player?
LH: *laughs* Honestly Ben, I wouldn't go that far. I'm just a guy who happens to be dating another guy. We really started out as just good friends, even though he's a bit nerdier than I can really grasp at times. But in the end we both just kind of found that we… you know... had feelings for each other. It's not really a big deal.
BH: Agreed, but there are some who would frown on this kind of relationship, especially with you two being professional athletes, not to mention teammates. Are you worried that this relationship will tarnish your public image, especially with your younger fans?
LH: Not at all. This is a perfectly healthy relationship. I know some people will have objections and that's fine, but I'm not going to let it get to me, you know?
BR: And will it affect your game?
LH: I really don't see how. When we're on the court, it's about the team, not about me, or my feelings toward someone. But if anything has changed, it might be that I can read him better, now. Otherwise, nothing's changed.
BR: Indeed, Well Luukas, thanks for spending some time with us.
LH: No problem. Take care, Ben.
