I've been to gun-knife shows with vendors selling knives made from old files and even RR spikes. Some knife catalogs offer blades, crossguards, bolsters and other parts for custom knife-making. Here, you cut the blank from sheet steel and ground it into final shape yourself. You go to the head of the class.
