No, it's not dumb at all. It is a beautiful thing to have a dragon's wing membranes attached to the body all the way across the hindquarters and even to the base of the tail, much like a bat's wings. The problem with that is that aerodynamically, it makes absolutely no sense, and with each flap of wings attached like that, the hindquarters would be dragged up and down, and flight would appear clumsy at best. Gliding would be incredibly efficient, but flight... yeah, not so much...

Whenever I see membranes like this, I applaud it.
