The cause was for joel to get back at Artie for the timed boxing glove device, in retaliation for the glimpse(s) of Artie's future, and then the frame ups for crimes joel didn't commit. But joel didn't take into an account of the him in the past to fall for Artie being a woman in that altered timeline.
