Roughing in the gold and starting to detail it. In case you're curious the palette is golden ochre, burnt sienna and the same white, burnt umber and ultramarine blue used for the fur and background. I've also washed in some more shadow over the left side of her face and neck.

I hardly ever use it as a straight colour. But is is the basis for 99% of my blacks and greys. It's also very, very useful for shadows. Maybe you're using a brand that doesn't have a good, smooth product. The one I use is Windsor Newton and it's just fine for mixing and such.
