~Love on the first night~
A small café on a chilly night in mid November, that’s where I first met the one who would change everything. The one who would mean the world to me, who would become my everything.
My favorite hideaway on a chilly night shortly before winter, that’s where I met the most wonderful person ever, the one who made life bearable and fun again. That’s where I met my soulmate.
~Chapter One~
Cocoa and Kisses
I pulled up outside a small café on Juniper Street, with a large mug of coffee sitting above the door, lights blinking on the gray “steam” sitting on top of the mug. It didn’t look like much at the time, but then again I didn’t know it would become my favorite place to be during my free hours. I parked my beat up Chevy near the door and got out into the brisk wind. Wrapping my jacket tight around me, I clicked the lock button on my key fob and headed inside for a warm drink. In my pocket sat a little paperback romance about a wolf-dog and a tigress who found love when their worlds collided at a company ball. As soon as I sat down, a cute little cat waitress popped out from behind the counter and offered me a menu, asking what I’d be having. “Hot cocoa with a touch of milk please.” I replied and as she walked off to make my order I popped the book out of my pocket and nestled down in the large comfy chair I had decided to lay claim to. I just about reached the part where the star-crossed lovers found out that they really worked right next to each other in their office building, when the waitress came up with my cocoa. “Thank you” I said politely, eliciting a perky smile from her as she nodded and went back to painting her nails behind the counter. Glancing around me as I raised the soft blue mug full of liquid warmth to my chapped lips, I noticed the only other person in the café was a small white fox-girl with large pink eyes, reading the same book as me. I couldn’t help but steal a glance at her every now and then as I continued to read, she was just so cute, I couldn’t help it…
I shivered as the door to the Lover’s Nook, my favorite café, opened and brought with it the chilly wind from outside. I glanced up from my book to see a pink German shepherd girl quickly scoot in, closing the door behind herself. I bit my lip softly as I looked at her: beautiful blue hair and eyes the color of the sky on a spring day, small gages in her earlobes, and a fluffy pink tail that swished behind her. She was absolutely beautiful. I could feel my stomach flipping over and over as I took a sip of my hot cocoa with a dash of milk. She settled down in the chair I liked to sit in when it was bright and sunny out and you could feel the sun warming your shoulders and casting a decent light over your book if you had one. I couldn’t help but look at her over the edge of my book every few minutes, praying she wouldn’t catch my hungry gaze. I noticed she was reading the same book I had: Star-crossed couple falls in love but doesn’t know they are really rivals within the same company. My heart fluttered a little, and I could understand how Greg -the advertising prodigy- felt when he laid eyes on Shelby -his marketing rival- at the ball.
I saw her glance over at me with those big pink eyes and my stomach felt like it was tying itself into a pretzel. Oh no! She caught me looking at her! I felt awful and embarrassed all at once- she’d seen me looking at her with my hungry eyes. My face burned scarlet as I hurriedly shoved it back into my book to hide. I desperately wanted to talk to her but I didn’t know where to start…
She saw me! What was I to do? What was she thinking? Oh I felt terrible.. my stomach felt like it was in zero gravity. I blushed bright red under my fur and hid behind my mug. I had to say something to her but what…
The book!
The book!
I could talk to her about the book! I felt terribly proud of myself as I thought of it. I could talk to her about the book, and maybe get to know her better.
We could talk about the book! It was brilliant. Get to know her through our similar tastes in literature, why hadn’t I thought of that earlier?
I gathered up my courage, book, and mug and started for her table. What if she didn’t like me? What if she thought I was a creep for looking at her so much? What if… I stopped myself short and took a deep breath, worrying was the last thing I needed right now. I walked up to her table and nervously said “Hi..” as I looked down into those big beautiful pink eyes, my stomach tightening with anxiety.
I started to get up, but realized she was coming my way. Oh no… I wasn’t prepared yet! I was a nervous wreck, my knees wobbling under the table. What was I to do? What was I supposed to say? My worrying was cut short by her shyly mumbled “Hi..” Blushing a little and praying it wasn’t visible, I murmured “Hi” back and introduced myself. “Im Teno.” Her beautiful sky-blue eyes sparkled as she replied with a quiet “Basil.”
And that is how I met who would soon come to be the love of my life.
How I met my soulmate.
