I know a lot of anime buffs out there don't consider it a great anime series - but the original Astro Boy was indeed one of the first anime series' made - and the recent 2006 remake series was wonderfully done and in my honest opinion stayed true to Tezuka Osamu's original creation.
Therefore - it is my opinion - that true anime fans should look out for these great box set shown above.. I bought it 2 years ago at Blockbuster Video for $60.00 - it contains all 50 episodes including some never before aired episodes! A lot of people may find it kiddyish and stupid to own such a box set..
To them I say - I consider it owning a part of anime history.. I also own the original Astro Boy anime series - but I consider the remake to be just as good if not better.. The same characters are around, the same storylines are present and the same morals that everyone should be treated as equals still apply to this series as it did when it first aired.. Astro Boy is a touching anime series and one that will probably remain in our hearts forever.

I guess there is just something about the Astro Boy series' that interested me.. just the futuristic look at the world and the fact that human beings and robots lived together.. kinda neat.. lol

Hrrm.. interesting...
it is and it isn't... the opening video is entirely different and the episode is not exactly the same...
My guess is they didn't so much redub the series -as recreate it with exact lip synching animation..
The opening sequence in the version I have is a whole heavy metal soundtrack by some American composer.

Meh I enjoyed it... Tezuka Osamu's morals were still there - and the true storyline of Astro Boy was still present.. which was the peaceful existence of robots and humans in a world where racism and sexism never existed..
And of course still providing the evil villians like Atlas for Astro to do battle with..

yeah, but I hated Astro's raspy voice, his "Let's Rocket" catchphrase, the fact that by trying to make him more "hip" they were constantly taking out any of his "cute" scenes, (Astro is cute on legs. If the dubbers can't deal with that, they shouldn't have dubbed it) then there's the fact that they re-wrote all the dark and violent scenes, (Like writing out the fact that Atlas was based on the rich man's son and NOT just another robot) and to top it off, THEY DUBBED IT OUT OF ORDER!! They basically did everything dubbing mistake I HATE!
Umm... they actually hinted several times that Atlas was based on the rich man's son who committed suicide because he couldn't deal with his father's rejection of him... evidently you must have watched a censored version on TV or something.. because the Astro Boy DVD series I have has a lot of dark storylines and atmosphere's in it..
Also.. to add to the voice of Astro.. keep in mind that the original voice actress who voiced Astro is long dead.. Candi Milo who voices Astro in this DVD set was a great voice actress in my opinion.. and did the voice of Astro very well.. true some of his catch phrases were sorta lame.. but you can't blame that on a voice actress who is just reading a script...
I do voice acting for cartoons and TV shows myself - and voice actors/actresses NEVER have any say about how to voice a character - its up to the voice director and if a voice actor ends up saying something like "Well.. actually I think this character's voice would sound better this way..." They are either ignored... or fired.

Yeah, I did mostly just see it on TV. TV and Veoh.com but I didn't watch too many episodes of it on Veoh. When dealing with Tobio's death, does the DVD show a flashback of Tobio crying in his bed because Tenma neglected him, or Tenma holding his dead son in his arms crying? Because the TV version and what I found on Veoh cut them both out from the Japanese versions.
I never blamed the voice actress. I'm aware they rarely if ever get a say. She did alright for what she was given. I blame the writers and voice director for trying to mess with the character in an attempt to make him "hip."

Interesting. Sounds like the DVDs are indeed cut out. Does the first episode have a scene where Astro tries to talk a walk with someone but accidentally swings him around like a rag doll? That was cut out when I saw it on TV. As was any scene of him playing with toys. (I'm under the impression it was an attempt to make him seem "hip."
I remember that scene! I have the Japanese versions of first six episodes if you want to compare on my Veoh account
