Well I did write the script in Basic which is specifically designed to be easy to follow, although technically this is a bit of frankensteining between real Basic and SmileBasic (used in Petit Computer on DSi). Truthfully if you have basic math and logic skills (and a metric crap-tonne of patience) programming is easy to get into.
Well the aforementioned Basic is as solid starting point as any, as it's specifically designed to be easily read and understood as well as teaching the fundamentals of programming.
While you can probably find a wealth of Basic compilers for free I would recommend getting Petit Computer if you have a DSi or 3DS. It does very little to hold your hand but it's easy enough to find tutorials online to get you started.

And as an aside if you're planning on giving this a shot? Invest in a good note book to keep track of commands and what you've learned.
