Swiftly running friend of man,
I ask you to enter this moment.
I seek the strength that allows you
to leap obstacles in your path.
I seek the stamina that allows you
to travel great distances.
I seek the nobility of your spirit,
able to carry the heaviest of burdens
without ever breaking,
the wildness you hold inside,
anticipating the freedom to come
and dancing in the freedom that always is.
Help me hold the truths that
power is found in the gathered wisdom of community
and also running alone and unrestrained,
wind rushing past with the landscape,
sky open and flat lands ahead,
dreams just beyond the horizon,
dust rising behind and sun overhead,
potential moving towards realization.
Free.
The poem above is something I found online one time when searching for Horse totem stuff to add to my Book of Shadows. I don't recall who wrote it, but it was something that resonated with me and so I jotted it down.
The wolf is definitely my Power Totem, but Horses are very high on the list as well. They come to me during times when travel is needed, either physically or just to move myself out of some state of mind that doesn't serve me anymore. I may never know all there is to know about having a horse as a companion, but I do know that there's some part of me that longs to be near them, and since I can't have one myself, I can live vicariously through Luthien.
This was just a random idea I had last weekend since I was feeling inspired by this Year of the Horse stuff I'm doing, and I realized I hadn't actually drawn Luthien's current horse yet. I hadn't even decided on a name yet, but I eventually chose Laire, which is Elvish for Summer. It's pronounced like "lie-ray".
I have drawn Luthien with several horses now, but the reason is because she's over 300 years old, so its reasonable to assume she's had more than one. ;) I like to think that maybe if Elves became bonded to an animal companion, they'd be able to bestow a bit of their immortality upon it, at least to give it a lengthened lifespan. :3
Anyway, my little nod to it being the Year of the Horse. I suppose that means lots of travel is in my cards this year, looking forward to seeing where the journey takes me. :)
