I got an ask on tumblr asking "Hi! Would you allow people to make their own Kyucean with credit to you for species creation or are they your own personal species?"
and since this isn't the first time I've been asked/hinted at about people making a 'kyucean'. I felt it was time to address it.

"I’m afraid ‘kyucean’ is just a word I decided to label my fursona as, I don’t really see them as a species?
See my main problem with ‘species’ and sharing the concept of a ‘species’ is people dont seem to understand the difference between a character and a design. And often times a ‘species’ is just a single character design constantly edited with different colors or add ons.
Basically if I made kyuceans an ‘open species’, I would just get nothing but recolors of my fursona, which will make my fursona lose its own unique charm and place in the furry fandom…
As much as I’d LOVE to share my concept of kyuceans, I just cant stand the thought of my fursona being the sole reference for the ‘species’ and it being constantly recolored or edited slightly. Because I truely see Chu Chu more so a character than just a ‘species’ or ‘design’. As much as I want to trust people can make their own uniquely shaped kyuceans, I just have VERY high doubts it wont happen, and that they will almost all look similar to Chu Chu.
And I say this from experience my dear anon ;u; I’ve been around social art sites for a long time and to most people it might not bug them! But for me its a HUGE pet peeve!
BUT, that doesn’t mean you cant be inspired to make your own seahorse-like creature and make up your own ‘species’ uwu. It’d probably be much more fun then using my concept anyways! So get creative and come up with something yourself and have fun!"

I apologize if this is an unpopular opinion! But it's an opinion I very strongly believe in being someone who is studying to get an animation degree and wanting to be a character designer in the future!
In no way do I discourage you guys from creating your own aquatic unique designs however! I love seeing cute fishies on FA <3 so take this stuff into account! And create something new! It'd be far better and unique than going with a 'species' that already exists to someone else's head cannons!

Really I don't like the term 'species' for things much. Why can't a character simply just be a character and leave it at that? I only gave Chu a 'species name' so I can refer to him as something ahhh...

I can understand that, a character can be a very personal thing one of the few things that is uniquely yours.
While most people who make "custom species" just pick a pre-existing one glue on wings and slap "closed species" on it so they can claim it's original. Yours actually is original, I've never seen anything like this, so I can understand why you'd want to protect it. If it became common place, it wouldn't be personal.

honestly idc about open species but i agree, but i hate closed species unless its something super duper 'special' but even then its annoying
i saw a closed species yesterday that was just a fat bunny basically??? like what???
i have a character with a rounded jagged snout im feelin like one day someone will say i stole the idea from someones closed species that has a rounded muzzle n i see people saying others stole that idea from them is they draw any kinda monster with a round snout
but im glad ur keeping your character unique i love giving my animal characters 'species' names heehe

GOD don't get me STARTED on 'closed species'. Half the time they're not even…a SPECIES. it will literally be something like 'FOOD DOGS' and suddenly people think they own the concept of slapping on candy to a dog's fur and it's it's own 'species' ??? like WHAT???? It's utterly ridiculous. And YEAH I totally see what you're saying.
I honestly don't mind people with closed species AS LONG AS they don't ATTACK someone for having a similar concept. I haven't seen it happen but I get a feeling it might for people who are overly protective over a design. It's often a pattern the designs are just…a very easy to conceive idea and I just ugh. I don't know man.

I agree with you man. In this case its very understandable seeing as Chu is your sona, so you don't want that copied and recoloured. I've had a couple of people ask me to turn Dohdoh into its own species and just, nope.
Species really have gotten crazy on here. I myself am honestly trying to make my own, but thats because I like being creative and want to push myself to try and really create something unique. Though if you take a rabbit and slap on a cat tail and bat wings and call it a closed species? Get your head outta your butt, seriouslly. If you're going to make a closed species, atleast TRY and MAKE something. Draw a monster out of nothing and give it a habitat and life cycle, make it personal, something that is litterally created, then I feel it can be a closed species since its something special to you.
It's pretty annoying when someone just makes a dog diffrent splashed features of other animals 'DO NOT STEAL OR CREATE, CLOSED SPECIES ITS UNIQUE AND SPECIAL' and get butthurt if like, one little detail they notice on someone else's character, as if its stolen.
Species are awesome when they are unique and not recolours (or atleast, recolour species arent closed, since thats lazy and dumb :/)
