This looks really awesome! I love how the color you used for the shading gives the piece a distinct atmosphere, even without a background. I think the pose you chose brings out the character's ferocity well, too. With his head straight-on, the expression and the mane are emphasized, and yet with the rest of the body turned to the side, the rest of the lion's strong form is also visible.
