The most widespread of all New World vultures, the Turkey Vulture is a dutiful scavenger who can be seen cleaning up roadkill on a regular basis. They lack a syrinx, the vocal box of all birds, and thus only hisses or grunts.
Though they have been demonized by farmers for carrying diseases or killing livestock, this is all false with the latter being a case of mistaken identity with the Black Vulture. Indeed, the Turkey Vulture is important to the mythology of multiple First Nation groups. The Lenape see him as the once beautiful white bird who saved the Earth from the Sun coming too close, and in the process sacrificing his good looks. He teaches us modesty, and to take on responsibilities that are necessary, but may be uncomfortable.

New World Vultures are so amazing, I love them ; o ;
And turkey vultures are surprising iridescent when you get up close to them! When I visited a raptor centre, they had a young turkey vulture they were training and getting used to people. He was so cute and adorable and shiny aaaah.
Also that Lenape story sounds very interesting, I'd love to hear it properly!

Indeed! And they have such wonderful personalities, too. I volunteer at an aviary with a bunch of non-releasable birds that we take out on educational programs, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE our turkey vultures. They're such sweet, shy birds. <3 We have one who's incredibly skittish, but if you talk to him while you're handling him or working in his enclosure, he calms right down.
