This afternoon I decided to go fly my plane. However, I also decided to put my GoPro on it and see what I could get. I'll upload the post-flight pics soon.

That is a good question. I had to mount it to the top because none of my outdoor planes so far have landing gear. They just skid to a stop and belly slide when taking off or are launched by hand. I can also catch them out of the air to keep them from skidding, but that's a little too dangerous to me. Those props are about as sharp as swords when spinning at full speed.
Yep I used fan fold foam for this. It is actually a very cheap method of building since it only costs me about $0.25 to $1.50 per plane. I got a 5x50 foot sheet from the local hardware store and can say that I will definitely be bringing it to college since you can use it for almost anything, even making tables strong enough to hold about 60lbs without trouble. By the way, the post flight pic is up now.
This motor/prop/motor setup was meant for a 3D plane (a term in the RC hobby) that can go straight up without any difficulty. The motor is a brushless which is much stronger than a brushed setup of similar weight due to the lower friction. Without that camera on the plane can cruise at about 1/4 throttle. Most trainers need 1/2 throttle or more to keep up if that puts the power of this system into perspective. While I'm rebuilding I'm going to experiment with different wings for more lift since I have the motor to do it. I just finished cutting out a second wing and some risers to make it into a biplane. I hope it will work because then I could get more weight into the air with it.
hehe I wish I could, but it's already getting the most air flow possible over the motor. It's an outrunner which means the wires are stationary in the middle and the outer can rotates with the shaft. This plane originally called for a motor and power system half this size and several people at the RC club have asked me if it could even fly with that much weight. Now I'm adding the 2nd wing to see what it does to go even more overkill. It won't be able to fly as fast but it should be able to carry more weight. Maybe I should put my FPV system on this
It probably does. How big of a battery do you run? I can run off of lipos or Pb batteries when I need to with this setup. I have a 7AH Pb that I might try with one of my spare motors to try making something like yours in the future or I might use my collection of 11.1v lipos in parallel to get the most run time. I would guess that would give me around 15000mah total. lol If I did that I would have to make sure I hold it well because it makes enough thrust to fly without wings.
