I would have to guess that's it's calming because it basically forces you to stop and breath. You know, like how they say that taking a few deep breaths can calm you down. That and it.gives your brain something else to focus on other than.whatever is bugging you at the time.
For smokers I'd have to imagine that it calms them because of the tension they build up from craving another hit. Once they get that then they relax and enjoy the cigarette.
