I understand. Scenes like these are sometimes a pain to write, but they are important to the overall story, and give insight to things not previously explained in the thick of battle.
The scenes I hate writing the most are Self-explained Character Flashbacks ... those kill me even though they are very necessary.

That's actually a really good way to go about it.
I usually try to have some form of distraction in between the telling ... in one of my scenes, there was a baby griffin going to town trying to demolish a chunk of meat larger then itself. It kept snatching their attention in the middle of this other character's story ... made for some amusing comments/reactions
