I discovered a beautiful new thing today - clear Gesso.
This is just me dicking around and testing how it reacts with different mediums - I love how the grit in the gesso picks up the red pigment from black Copic markers. Going to be using various effects here on a big commission, but I like how this turned out for just an experiment.

Working on a HUGE piece right now that I can't wait to see come to fruition.
After I get done with the two current commissions, I'm going to town on this technique for personal stuff - I'm jazzed to have finally found an ARCHIVAL method of doing layered dry media work on a medium with texture.

What I love about conté and why I prefer it over pastels and charcoal is that it feels very slightly more waxy, so it doesn't powder up the damn page as badly. I have no idea why most people don't like it, but it's always been easier for me to control.
Oh, and the pigments seem more opaque. that's another reason I like it.
